Text Rain

Introduction

Text Rain is an interactive installation in which participants use the familiar instrument of their bodies, to do what seems magical—to lift and play with falling letters that do not really exist. In the Text Rain installation, participants stand or move in front of a large projection screen. On the screen, they see a mirrored video projection of themselves in black and white, combined with a color animation of falling letters. Like rain or snow, the letters appear to land on participants’ heads and arms. The letters respond to the participants’ motions and can be caught, lifted, and then let fall again. The falling text will ‘land’ on anything darker than a certain threshold, and ‘fall’ whenever that obstacle is removed.

Purpose

Interactive computer graphics can be used for many purposes. One of the most engaging is interactive art. This project is used for understanding the basic concepts of computer graphics and animation. Text Rain is an engaging video-based digital installation and it is easy to be re-implemented with the help of Processing.

Design

The general idea of the project is not sophisticated: re-calculating the position of the character for each frame. However, the problem is edge detection and moving along with edge. Therefore, my solutions are (a) if the latter's edge collides with the objects' edge, it will find the last position which is not the edge and locate there, and (b) if something shows suddenly, the latter will vanish, like the raindrop.
